What is a church?

I've asked this question before and am increasingly convinced that the church exists without buildings, finance, committees, carparks, etc and thrive! In fact I'm fairly sure this is what Jesus was talking about and what was established in Acts.

I was surprised by this conversation here for several reasons. The most dramatic part being it would seem to me that many people think of church as dogma and rote.

I've come to realize there are many problems with the church's theology:

For starters, it's Arminian influenced


Arrgghh. Somebody thinks something different to me... so HE must be wrong!

Christians are their own worst enemies sometimes...

Interestingly the most respected systematic theology scholar, Wayne Grudem (who is definitely a Calvinist), states in his book that to be a church a denomination MUST observe the sacraments. Then in a footnote says that the exception to this rule is The Salvation Army!
